Skill Sharpening #3

Time to pull out your writer’s toolbox and inspect the tools within. Try out the challenge below

If you’ve been to our workshops you’ll have seen the discussion about dialogue. Dialogue has often been cited as one of the hardest parts of novel writing; so today we’re going to practice our dialogue skills.

Pick two or three characters and write out a conversation between them. Use your word choices to show character, to inject emotion (either positive or negative) into the scene. Remember that writing dialogue is not the same as writing narration but it is important. As obvious as it sounds, your dialogue needs to tell the reader something while also sounding natural.

Want an added challenge? Write your piece using only dialogue. That means no tags, no actions, no descriptors. Just a good old back and forth conversation.
