WWE: Are you Ready to Rumble?

Two stylised figures wrestling

There’s one week left until the WordFam Writing Extravaganza (WWE) begins! Are you ready to wrestle with your words and come out on top?

WWE is a month-long challenge, so it’s important to set yourself up to succeed. If you’ve done a month-long writing challenge before, you might be familiar with what to do (and what not to do!). We’d love to hear what advice you might have!

If you haven’t done something like this before, don’t worry, we’ve got your back. The WordFam is packed with people who’ll help you get and stay on track. We’ve got a Prep Session lined up towards the end of June, so come along to swap tips and tricks!

Here are just a few of the things you can do to get ready for next month’s writing challenge:

  • Pick a specific goal. It can be a word or page count to aim for, whatever works for your project. Make it something you can break down into daily portions and work through. That way, you’ll be able to track your progress through the month.
  • Set the goal in our tracker. Let the tracker do all the work so you know how much you need to do each day to stay on target! Check in frequently through the month to enjoy the graphs and feedback.
  • Know where you’re starting. This one sounds obvious but it’s a step many miss! Get this clear ahead of time so you can hit the ground running on 1st July. Does that mean planning out your story? Noodling some ideas in your head? Getting notecards lined up in your writing space? Opening the doc to the right section? Whatever works for you and your process!
  • Stock up on supplies. Are there specific snacks or drinks that help you crack on with your writing? Now is a great time to make sure you’re all stocked and ready to go with great writing fuel.
  • Line up rewards! You’re going to be working hard and you deserve nice things. Set yourself up with some rewards for hitting milestones as you work through your goal. It can be anything you like, from a massage, to a cookie, to taking some time to watch a favourite movie and recharge.
  • Make space in your schedule. WWE happens only once a year, so see if you can make some exceptions in July to focus on your writing. Let your people know you’ll be concentrating your energies there and maybe push off some of those tasks or meetups to another time. Check out our calendar of events to see what you can join for company and motivation.
  • Set up your writing space. Now is a great time to clean your writing space and reset it for the WWE kickoff, so you get a nice, fresh start. Also think about putting up some inspiration for your project, if you haven’t already. If you don’t have a comfy writing nest, maybe this is the perfect opportunity to build one!

We have a heap of resources to get yourself ready, like:

You can also chat to us on the Discord server if there’s anything you’d like advice or pointers on!

What else do you do to prep for a writing challenge? We’d love to hear about it!

The countdown is on. Let’s get ready to rock!
