Reinvention: Challenge #3

Just joined this Asylum? Start from the beginning!

In our last challenge, you wrote about what your character’s new beginning looked like. But it would be no fun if these things went smoothly, so let’s look at a bump in their road.

Your character was forced to give up and leave behind a lot of things. Some of these things might have been easy to move on from; others are likely harder to put aside completely. In this challenge, let’s look at something they’ve been reminded of.

Some time after entering this new life, your character comes across a reminder of the life they left behind. It might be a problem they have the skills to solve but shouldn’t, in case the wrong person finds out and their cover is broken. It might be an image of someone they left behind. It might be a story in the media about someone or something they care about but can no longer reach getting in trouble. It may simply be a reminder of a specific event in their life they can no longer revisit.

What kind of feelings does this reminder throw up for your character? Are they able to move past it without doing anything that might jeopardise their current situation and safety? Do they internalise their reaction or act upon it? Where does it leave them? Do they stumble or stay strong?

If they brought others with them into witness protection, what about them? Are they a part of this reminder? How do they react?

For your third challenge, tell us what happens when your character confronts a reminder of their old life.

Your bonus element for this challenge is: Single Tone. Pick a colour (that is not white, black, or grey) and use it to tone the whole scene.
