Reinvention: Challenge #2

Picture of a twisting corridor

Just joined this Asylum? Start from the beginning!

So now we know why your character entered witness protection and who they brought with them, if anyone. Now let’s see what their new life looks like.

This is your character’s second chance at making a life. Let’s assume it’s largely up to them. What would they choose to make it? Can they continue in their previous profession or would it be too easy to track them through it? If they have to do something else for their living, what would it be?

Witness protection means relocating to a new place, which might be a new city, country, or even planet or plane of existence if that’s an option in your world. So where does your character physically end up? How do they adjust to the new place?

What else do they have to change about who they are? What about themself are they forced to change, and what do they choose to change? Is it just their name, or their appearance as well? Something else?

How does your character deal with the changes? Do they approach this new life with a positive outlook, resent it for everything they’ve lost, or feel guilty for what brought them here? All of the above? Does this represent an opportunity to make a better life for themself and the people they love most? Do they hate it for everything it cannot be for them?

Can they commit to making the best of it? Do they spend all their time looking over their shoulder for the threat that drove them into protection in the first place?

If they brought family with them, how do their family members respond to their new lives? Do they find it better than before or worse?

What kind of restrictions must they abide by in their new life to keep their security intact? They likely cannot contact anyone from their old life and must stay out of the media. What does this mean for them?

Is anyone involved inclined to embrace where they are now?

Your second challenge is to show us what entering their new life looks like and how the people affected adjust.

Your bonus element for this challenge is: Masks. Include imagery of masks in the scenery and metaphors.
